Yeast infections are common, and may range from annoying to painful. Women are more likely to be affected, but men also suffer from yeast infections. Fortunately, you can safely treat a yeast infection at home without much effort.

Yogurt
Eating yogurt is one of the most popular, and easy, ways to treat yeast infection at home.  Look for plain yogurt that is made from live cultures. There are two ways to use yogurt as a treatment cure: 1) eat the yogurt, or 2) insert 1 or 2 tablespoons into the vagina or rectum (whichever is affected).

Lactobacillus and Douching
Another popular method is to insert lactobacillus tablets vaginally one to two times daily, for a few days.  Also, douche with vinegar twice daily for two days. You should be able to find lactobacillus tablets in your local health-food store or at a pharmacy.

Boric Acid
Some people have found relief by inserting boric acid tablets vaginally once daily for seven days.  Be aware, though, that pregnant women should avoid this method. It may also be a good idea to check with your doctor before trying this.

Fungal Creams
Yeast is a fungus, so it makes sense that you can treat a yeast infection at home with fungal cream. There are several over-the-counter brands you can use. Look for creams that contain either miconazole or clotrimazole. It is important to use the creams as directed, including duration. Do not stop using the cream just because symptoms have gone away. Stopping too soon may cause the yeast infection to return.

Garlic
People suffering from thrush (a yeast infection of the mouth) may find relief by eating garlic. Simply enjoy two fresh garlic cloves a day, either whole or minced. It is okay to eat the garlic with food if you do not like the spicy bite they cause.

Baking Soda
Another way to treat a yeast infection at home is to combat thrush deals with brushing your teeth. Brush with a mild toothpaste and baking soda. If this method causes sores, then discontinue it. Also, be sure to throw away your toothbrush after your thrush clears up so you do not reinfect your mouth.

Rosemary Tea
Although good for drinking, rosemary tea has also proved to be effective at relieving the pain and itching from yeast infections. Brew some rosemary tea, let it cool, then use as a douche. You can also dab the tea onto the affected areas with a cotton ball.

Treat Both Partners
When someone gets a yeast infection who is in a relationship, it is wise to treat both people, since the other person may also be infected but not yet symptomatic.  This is a another good way to treat a yeast infection at home.

Preventing Future Yeast Infections
For those prone to yeast infections, there are a few steps you can take to prevent future infections:
- Wear underwear that is made of cotton and fits loosely.
- Dry your private regions completely before putting on underwear.
- Do not sit around in a wet bathing suit for long periods of time.
- Avoid sexual contact with a partner currently experiencing an infection.
- Do not share towels, as this can infect other people.

As you can see, there are plenty of home treatment options available for yeast infections. Unless absolutely necessary, you can skip the doctor and go straight to home remedies the next time you get a yeast infection.
